The Trademark Blog: Michael Jackson Was A Credited Inventor For A Patent For Moon Walking!

  • snitty · 5 months ago
This actually didn't have anything to do with moonwalking. It was a method for leaning far over, and then straightening back up. It's an old magic illusion (usually involving a metal plate in the shoe and a bolt in the floor), but I guess MJ invented a new way of performing it.

So, you're saying that MJ patented leaning forward? Let me know if he has a patent for leaning backwards and if he hasn't, I will apply for one myself. I'm not sure who is running the asylum here - Jackson or the patent examiners!

The patent does seem to be for a plate in a stage floor and a type of shoe designed to connect to it; I'm not sure how it differs from the older versions used by others earlier, but apparently the patent examiners thought it was sufficiently different from prior art.

The patent is not about moonwalking. It's about leaning forward very far. Moonwalking doesn't require that.

It was, and is, a real patent. It has, however, expired (as of 2005) for failure to pay maintenance fees. Feel free to lean over really far without fear of infringement.

Another example of a wasted Michael Jackson asset.

this is for the "smooth criminal" lean, not the moonwalk. In the video it was done with cables, but in concert, he wanted a way to still perform the "lean" but be able to move around stage. So slots were added in to the stage floor and a locking device added to the shoes.
